Your concern is understandable and you are not the only one to experience it. We at ParaNet recommend that you start by openly talking in the household about social media services and about what we all experience while using them. This is a great way to get closer with your kids and to bring the household together. Once an open dialogue about social media has been established in the family we can start talking about the parent's online role of guiding and navigating the child towards appropriate, regulated conduct. You can also mention that once parents are presented with a real reason for concern, they retain the right to more deeply involve themselves. This might include entering Whatsapp accounts, Facebook accounts, and other social media. It is important to remember that we need to respect the children's personal space and establish trust and patterns of open and constructive dialogue with them, but at the same time clear rules should be set about the parent's involvement on social media.
